This week, U.S. Representative Jim Costa (D-CA) traveled to Armenia, where he met with Armenian officials, visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, and presented at American University of Armenia.

On July 20, accompanied by the Head of the Armenian National Assembly (NA) Armenia-USA Friendship Group Samvel Nikoyan, Rep. Costa paid tribute to the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. Rep. Costa laid flowers at the eternal fire and honored in silence the memory of the victims. He toured the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute and watched the posters of the “Auction of Souls” silent movie starring Aurora Mardiganian. Rep. Costa concluded his visit to the memorial by writing a note in the guest book, just as Pope Francis had done a few weeks prior.

The same day, Rep. Costa met with the Speaker of the Armenian NA, Galust Sahakyan. Welcoming his guest, Sahakyan said that he is glad to host a friend of Armenia in the Parliament who is from Fresno, where the well-known American Armenian writer William Saroyan lived. During the meeting, Rep. Costa, thanked Sahakyan for the warm reception, and added that visiting Armenia had been his old dream. As their meeting concluded, Sahakyan awarded Rep. Costa the Republic of Armenia’s NA Medal of Honor for his pro-Armenian activities.

Rep. Costa also presented at the American University of Armenia (AUA), where he spoke about the United States-Armenia relations, the significant role that AUA plays in that relationship, and the importance of AUA for Armenia and the region. Rep. Costa also spoke about on the Fresno Armenian Community and the CSU Fresno-AUA relationship.
