Pope Francis Donates Union-Symbolizing Stone to Gyumri Church

(NEWS.am) – Pope Francis donated a symbolic stone to the Holy Martyrs Armenian Catholic Cathedral in Gyumri, Armenia.

The stone is taken from the wall of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica Cardinal Angelo Comastri sent this stone on behalf of the Pope along with a letter, reported the Armenian Catholic Church diocese press office.

In the letter, Cardinal Comastri explained that this stone was previously placed in the holy door of St. Peter’s Basilica in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

The stone was removed from the basilica in December 2015, at the start of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

The stone is presented to Armenia as a sign of close communion with the Pope.

The symbolic stone will be placed in the wall of the Holy Martyrs Church of Gyumri.
