Pope’s Visit to Armenia Planned for September 2016

(Combined Sources) – Pope Francis is expected to visit Armenia in September 2016, the Information Service of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin reports.

The issue was discussed on February 18 during the Supreme Religious Council meeting, chaired by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.

“Such a visit is expected in September, but I cannot name any concrete dates at this point. The visit is being planned. Negotiations are being held with the Vatican to specify its format and concrete dates,”

the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin chief spokesman Vahram Melikian said, Interfax reports.

Meanwhile, Vatican sources told Télam today that it was “plausible” for Pope Francis to visit Georgia and Azerbaijan as well.

On September 2014, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan visited the Holy See and the official invited the pontiff to Armenia.

In 2015, the head of the Roman Catholic Church said “the first genocide of the XXI century” was the 1915 massacre of 1.5 million Armenians, a genocide recognized by 27 countries, including Argentina.

Turkey withdrew its ambassador to the Vatican in protest against Pope Francis’ description of the century-old massacres of Christian Armenians as genocide. In February this year, Turkey returned its diplomat.
