Pope Francis Hopes to Visit Armenia in 2016

On Monday,
November 30th, Pope Francis held an hour-long news conference aboard
the papal plane at the end of a six-day trip to Africa, heading towards Rome. During
this news conference, Pope Francis spoke about his future plans, including a
possible trip to Armenia

The Vatican
has a previous history and good relations with Armenia. Pope Francis delivered
a mass on April 12, 2015 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide and called on heads of state to condemn the actions which led
to the killing of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915.

Pope Francis
referenced a declaration on the Armenian Genocide signed in 2001 by Pope John
Paul II and Catholicos Karekin II and shared a very powerful statement during
the mass. Calling the Armenian killings “the first genocide of the 20th
century,” Francis argued, “concealing or denying evil is like
allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it.”
